Family Friendly highlights at 2025 Edinburgh International Festival

 Whether you're introducing younger children to the joy of music with Art of Listening for Families (ages 7–11) or bringing older kids to an electric performance of Prokofiev, this year’s programme is packed with opportunities to experience the music and dance together.  

The Big Singalong: Sun 3 Aug, time TBC [Princes Street Gardens]

We invite you to join a huge singalong in the heart of the city. Gather friends and family to start your Festival season on a high note at Princes Street Gardens. Stephen Deazley, artistic director of Edinburgh’s Love Music Community Choir, leads the crowd in a mass singalong, joined by a very special guest to be revealed soon. NYO2 Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony: Sun 3 Aug, 7.30pm [Usher Hall]

One for the older kids. This evening concert features the outstanding young American instrumentalists of NYO2, led by Venezuelan conductor Rafael Payare. They take on a thrilling pairing of Dmitri Shostakovich and Sergei Prokofiev. Listen to the edgy first movement of Shostakovich's cello concerto: As part of their International Festival Residency, Carnegie’s Hall’s NYO2 brings together talented 14-17-year-old musicians offering fresh energy and new perspectives on orchestral music. Book Now

NYO2 Family Concert: Mon 4 Aug, 2pm [Usher Hall]

A chance for families to usher in festival season in a relaxed environment at an affordable price. Recommended for ages 7-11 but suitable for all. Back due to popular demand, this special interactive introduction to classical music is for children and their grown-ups. Join conductor Greg Lawson, known for his adventurous approach to music, and presenter Lucy Drever, a passionate musical storyteller, as they team up with NYO2’s inspiring young musicians for a transatlantic celebration of sound. Ceilidh Sessions: Mon 4 Aug, 4pm [Princes Street Gardens]

Led by the celebrated Norwegian folk ensemble Barokksolistene, The Ceilidh Sessions gives listeners the chance to enjoy an eclectic afternoon of Scots programming in an open air setting. Get down to the front and join in the dancing, or sit back, relax and enjoy the music at your own pace. Gather at Princes Street Gardens with your loved ones for an afternoon of music and storytelling, inspired by the Gaelic ceilidh tradition. Barokksolistene bring their characteristically energetic performance style to the table. Alongside beloved dances like The Gay Gordons and Strip the Willow, Barokksolistene adds an irresistible repertoire of Baroque music, sea shanties and alehouse tunes to the mix. Book Now

Art of Listening for Families: Mon 4–Sat 9 Aug

Discover the world of classical music together with your child. Our flagship music workshop, Art of Listening, has been adapted for families. Led by a professional opera singer, pianist and facilitator, this interactive workshop celebrates the power of listening deeply, together. Suitable for children aged 7–11, accompanied by adults of all ages. Book Now

  • Affordability: Under 18s go half price at the Edinburgh International Festival. Find out more.
  • Young Musician’s Pass: If your child plays an instrument or sings, is aged 8–18 and lives in Scotland, they are eligible to join the Young Musican's Pass (YMP). YMP members can get their hands on up to three pairs of tickets for selected performances in the International Festival music programme.
