Shaping the Future with the Edinburgh Science Festival 2024
Welcome to the Edinburgh Science Festival, the world’s first and largest celebration of science! Immerse yourself in a two–week extravaganza from 30 March–14 April 2024, where we bring science to life through an exciting array of events, workshops, shows, and talks for all ages.
This year’s Science Festival explores the theme Shaping the Future, showcasing on some of the cutting-edge science that can help us create a future that is sustainable, accessible and equal for all.
What does the future hold for us? Where will we be as individuals, as a community, as a planet in 10 years time? With constant news headlines of war, climate change and tech fears, it can be easy to lose hope – but our future isn’t set.
More than 150 events are due to be held during the two-week festival, which will explore the impact of climate change, artificial intelligence and medical research around the world, including:
- Big Ideas, a series of talks aimed at adults, brings some of the world’s most renowned scientists and thinkers to the Scottish capital.
- Guaranteed sell-out every year, Science Nights Out are back with more creative ways to get everyone hands-on with science in a relaxed environment.
- Growing Home, a new interactive exhibition, is taking over the National Museum of Scotland. Explore biologically derived materials and discover how they can become a part of our daily lives.
- The Festival takes over Edinburgh with events, talk, workshops and exhibitions taking place at the National Museum of Scotland, Dynamic Earth, The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, Edinburgh Zoo, Summerhall, Bayes Centre and many others, with new additions of Panmure House, Mary’s King Close and The Biscuit Factory.
- Shows for children 5+ include Bakineering, exploring the science of baking by Andrew Smyth – of The Great British Bake Off fame, and a return of last year's sellout The Rocket Show!
