Background

The idea at the heart of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe is simple: anyone with a desire to perform and a venue willing to host them is welcome. No individual or committee determines who can or cannot perform at the Fringe.

It all began in 1947 with eight companies – six of them from Scotland – taking a risk, turning up uninvited and performing on the ‘fringe’ of the inaugural Edinburgh International Festival. Over 70 years later, the Fringe has grown to become the greatest celebration of arts and culture on the planet, second only to the Olympics in terms of global ticketed events. In 2019, over 30,000 artists put on 3,841 shows in 323 venues right across Edinburgh.

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society is the charity that was established by artists to act as the custodian of the Fringe. We exist to support, advise and encourage everyone who wants to participate; provide information and assistance to audiences; and celebrate the Fringe and what it stands for all over the world.

About The Role

As we emerge from the traumatic effects of Covid on the culture and events sector, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society faces a significant and ongoing challenge in stabilising our own organisation and rebuilding for the future. Alongside this, we have an enormous opportunity to use our convening power to fundraise for the renaissance of the Fringe itself. As we head into our 75th anniversary in 2022, we are committed to a rebirth of the Edinburgh Fringe as the best possible experience for all who participate in it. We are fundraising for a Fringe Society and Fringe committed to our core principles of access, fairness, inclusion, sustainability.

The Fringe Society is looking for a senior level fundraising and sponsorship expert to lead their small development team to success on three ambitious challenges: our £10million Save the Fringe Campaign; our search for new corporate partnerships; and a reimagining of our hugely popular Fringe Friends initiative. The role will report directly to the Chief Executive and lead on vital areas of our income generation strategy. You will work closely with colleagues across the Fringe Society’s teams in Marketing, Participant Services and Operations, as well as the Fundraising Working Group of the board to ensure a strategic approach and collective commitment to the fundraising effort.

You will manage key relationships with sponsors, corporate partners, funding bodies, trusts and foundations and individual donors, as well as developing and nurturing new relationships for the long term.
