Each autumn as the days get shorter and the temperature gets cooler, the Scottish International Storytelling Festival returns to our historic festival city.

This year, as Scotland celebrates the Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology, the tradition of storytelling will bring artists from around the world together as the festival welcomes storytellers from as far away as Australia, New Zealand, India, South America, China and Japan.  With 69 events taking place across 12 days there is literally something for everyone with a range of family events, talks and tours on offer.

This is our biggest year and we are absolutely delighted with the programme – it’s the Festival of festivals, a worldwide magic carpet for story lovers. Don’t miss the flight!

In the year that Edinburgh celebrates the 70th anniversary of the emergence of the world’s leading festival city; for the first time the festival will host a Global Gathering of storytelling activists. Taking place from 25th-27th October, the gathering will look at the role of storytellers in the twenty first century and will aim to answer three key questions: What can I know? What should I do? What may I hope?

As a city synonymous with literature, this year the festival is partnering with Mercat Tours on a 90-minute walking tour to explore Edinburgh’s medieval Old Town. The tour has been designed to show visitors how the city has inspired writers whose influence is felt across the globe and how the words written have changed the world.

The Scottish International Storytelling Festival takes place from 20-31 October 2017. More information on this year’s programme.
