Edinburgh International Festival's much-anticipated Standard Life Opening Event: Deep Time took place on Sunday 7 August with breathtaking visuals projected onto Edinburgh Castle and a pulsating soundtrack from Scottish post-rock group, Mogwai.

Thousands of Edinburgh's citizens and visitors gathered to witness the magnificent animated lightshow celebrating the work of James Hutton, whose examinations of the city's volcanic legacy were hugely influential in shaping modern geology.

Under largely clear skies, beautiful images of an evolving landscape, passing millennia and modern day Edinburgh, thrilled those gathered to watch, as International Festival Associate Artists 59 Productions once again showed off the visual flair which made 2015's Harmonium Project such an acclaimed success.

The final stages of the production featured scores of crowd-sourced images of people with Edinburgh connections, followed by a brightly coloured map of the Earth, as the piece ended with the International Festival's 2016 slogan, "Welcome, World".

Edinburgh International Festival takes place from Friday 5 to Monday 29 August. Find out more about the Festival, including programme and ticket booking details.
