North meets South as Tattoo opens in Australia

For only the fourth time in its history, the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is being staged away from its home at Edinburgh Castle, with the first performance in Melbourne taking place in the early hours of Friday 12 August.

Performers from Australia, Fiji, New Zealand, Norway, Switzerland, Tonga and the United Kingdom came together to deliver the world class event to thousands of fans in the Etihad Stadium.

Those in attendance were treated to the spectacular sights and sounds offered by the unique military spectacular, and reactions on social media were immediately positive:

@AdamNisbett could only talk in hashtags (and some great photos) after the show, saying "#TattooTour #Royal #Edinburgh #Military #Tattoo #Amazing #Melbourne

@CPtraveller was also impressed, tweeting "Just attended the great spectacle of the Edinburgh Military Tattoo right here in Melbourne.

"Fabulous nite at Edinburgh Etihad Melbourne...lots of National pride..." said @gerster_kayline, while @BrokenMelody123 said "#TattooTour deserved a larger standing ovation tonight- absolutely breathtaking one and all. So proud to be Aussie

The mix of global cultures was remarked on by @Frank_McGuire: "Scotland the Brave accompanied by a didgeridoo at Edinburgh Military Tattoo in Melbourne. Now I've heard everything" he said.

Meanwhile @clanjava was just a little concerned about a displaced icon - "Who stole Edinburgh castle??? #TattooTour" he tweeted. Luckily the one at the Melbourne shows is just a very convincing replica!
