Jazz & Blues Festival - one month to go!
There's just one month to go until the start of the Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival (17-26 July), and preparations are well underway - so here's a look at some of the highlights to come next month.
The Festival covers a wide range of differing musical styles and genres across 150 or so gigs, so there's plenty for the musically minded to choose from - and it goes beyond jazz and blues too, with swing, funk, soul and more...
For fans of Jazz music there are a lot of options - Contemporary jazz, Trad jazz, Swing jazz, Vintage jazz, New Orleans jazz... and all that jazz!
Big events and artists this year include jazz/soul legend George Benson, piano master Jools Holland, Curtis Stigers in the BBC Big Band Frank Sinatra Centenary Concert, Ambrose Akinmusire, Antonio Sanchez, Melissa Aldana, Warren Vaché and Brian Kellock, among many more.
The Festival boasts a particularly strong Blues showing this year, with Blues rock, Memphis blues, Mississippi blues, San Francisco blues, UK blues and much more of that deep soulful sound.
Look out for Chicago Blues stars Mud Morganfield, Lurrie Bell and Willie "The Touch" Hayes, Mali's Songhoy Blues, the Jenson Interceptors, Royal Southern Brotherhood, guitar star Mr Sipp, Scotland's Mike Whellans, Cedric Burnside, Lil Ed, Tommy Smith, Moreland & Arbuckle and a rare solo show from Stefan Grossman.
2015's Jazz and Blues Festival also features lots of great music from influential genres on the edges of the festival's titular two.
There's beatboxing from Butterscotch, gospel from the McCrary Sisters and Naomi Shelton & the Gospel Queens, funk from Person to Person (former members of the Average White Band), plus electronica, hip hop, latin, afro-beat and DJs at the two-day Cross the Tracks Weekender at Summerhall.
Finally, don't forget to take advantage of the Festival's two huge free open air events, the Mardi Gras on Saturday 18 July in Edinburgh's Grassmarket, and the ever-popular Edinburgh Festival Carnival on Sunday 19 July starting on the Mound and winding its way through Princes Street Gardens and the Grassmarket.
Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival runs from 17-26 July 2015.
