A Greener Future

A lot has changed over the last few months but helping to create a greener future is still a top priority for us. Our August Festival's offerings include several about climate change and re-imagining a greener world.

Edinburgh Art Festival

The Edinburgh Art Festival have invited ten artists from previous festival editions, to mark the dates of what would have been their 2020 festival. Artist and activist Ellie Harrison presents her graph showing the Tonnes of carbon produced by the personal transportation of a ‘professional artist’, connecting literal and social mobility and highlighting the consequences of our travel choices for our climate, which have come into focus during lockdown. The graph is displayed at poster sites at Meadowbank and Calton Road in Edinburgh, 30 July – 30 August.

Edinburgh International Book Festival

The Edinburgh International Book Festival (15-31 August) goes online this year with over 140 free events, including vital discussions about climate change and the natural world. See Executive Vice-President of the European Green Deal project Frans Timmermans in conversation with Gordon Brown; former UN Secretary for Climate Christiana Figueres speaks with lobbyist Tom Rivett-Carnac; take part in a debate on capitalism and climate change; and hear incredible nature writers like Kathleen Jamie, Helen Macdonald and lots more.

Edinburgh Festival Fringe

Edinburgh residents, international fans of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, artists and arts professionals can all help reimagine a greener, more diverse and accessible Edinburgh Fringe by submitting a response (creative or written) to the #FutureFringe campaign. For those who work in the arts, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe’s Fringe Exchange and Fringe Central forums include a discussion on Festivals Transitioning to respond to climate change, an examination of the future of international working with a panel of industry experts, and how to get more mileage from your artistic work (without travelling an inch).

Edinburgh International Festival

Edinburgh International Festival’s series Artists in the Age of Covid featured a ‘Future Gazing’ discussion on arts, sustainability and reimagining the future, and presents discussions on topics including power, technology and the impact of the arts over the coming days.
