Spring Festivals Update Regarding COVID-19
Following close monitoring of the ever-changing situation regarding the global spread of COVID-19 (Coronavirus), The Edinburgh Science Festival and Edinburgh International Children's Festival have taken the sad but necessary decision to cancel this year’s festivals. The Edinburgh International Film Festival has postponted the 74th Festival due to take place in June and are looking at which elements of the Festival can be delivered later in the year.
Edinburgh Science Festival Creative Director, Amanda Tyndall said:
‘’Now more than ever it is imperative that the public have access to robust, evidence-based science, delivered in a manner that is accessible to them. The Science Festival remains committed to that goal and to working with our wonderful partners across the sector to help connect people with the latest science in these unsettling times.
We are exploring how we might do more online and whether any elements of the Festival might potentially be run later in the year and will keep you informed as plans develop. For now, we would like to thank our funders, sponsors, partners, participants and audiences for their loyalty, support and understanding.”
Edinburgh International Children's Festival Director Noel Jordan said:
“Our priority is now on supporting those we work with and minimising their potential loss of income. I want to ensure the cancellation of the Festival does not mean financial hardship for the small arts organisations, freelancers and independent artists we rely on to make our Festival the special event that it is. So we will honour the contracts of all those individuals who were confirmed to work on the Festival this year. We will also work with artists over the coming months to support them and to find artistic responses to the coronavirus situation. For now, we would like to thank our funders, partners, performing companies and audiences for their loyalty, support and understanding.’’
CEO of Edinburgh International Film Festival, Ken Hay said:
“It is with huge regret that we have taken the necessary decision to postpone the 74th Edinburgh International Film Festival. Film festivals are critical platforms for films and filmmakers to reach and engage with audiences, and EIFF has done this uninterrupted for 74 years. However the health and wellbeing of our staff, filmmaker guests and audiences has to be the first consideration.
We are looking at which elements of the Festival may be delivered later in the year and we will keep you informed as plans develop. For now, we would like to thank our funders, sponsors, partners, staff, donors, patrons, filmmakers, sales agents, distributors and audiences for their loyalty, support and understanding in these unprecedented times.”
